Phi Tau Sigma celebrates the enduring legacy of Dr. Anthony ("Tony") W. Kotula, whose distinguished career in meat science, decades of service to the Society, and sustained generosity have advanced food safety, professional recognition, and opportunities for future generations of food scientists.

A Distinguished Career in Meat Science and Public Service

Dr. Kotula’s professional legacy is rooted in his extensive 38 years of service with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 25 of those years as the Supervisory Food Technologist of the Meat Science Research Laboratory of the   Agricultural Research Service. Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to solving complex challenges within the poultry and meat science, and food technology industries, advancing rigorous scientific standards that directly protected and improved the safety, quality, and wholesomeness of the global food supply: "Research with Impact".

His peer-recognized expertise earned him widespread respect across the discipline, culminating in prestigious honors such as the Dr. Carl R. Fellers Award in 2010—which celebrates members who have brought profound recognition to food science through leadership, service, and innovation. As a dedicated Lifetime Member of Phi Tau Sigma, Dr. Kotula’s involvement went far beyond his professional accolades. Alongside his daughter, Dr. Kathryn L. Kotula, he famously co-created and nurtured the Society's monthly newsletter, fostering community, engagement, and communication across generations of food scientists.

Fostering the Future: The Kotula Legacy of Giving

Dr. Kotula’s commitment to education and mentorship is permanently embedded in Phi Tau Sigma's awards portfolio. His profound influence inspired the creation of the Phi Tau Sigma – AMSA 'Research with Impact' Scholarship. This vital award emphasizes the importance of original, practical research tailored to solving pressing problems within the meat and broader food industries.

Deepening this tradition of support, Dr. Kotula recently endowed the Phi Tau Sigma Mid-Career Accomplishment Award. This vital recognition was inspired by the career and contributions of Dr. Kathryn L. Kotula to recognize and foster the development of mid-career professionals—spanning academia, industry, government, and associations—who have demonstrated significant skills and impactful contributions between 10 to 20 years into their fields.

Demonstrating an ongoing dedication to the Society’s core mission, Dr. Kotula has advanced to become a Diamond Contributing Partner. This distinguished philanthropic status reflects a legacy of sustained financial support that underpins student scholarships, professional recognition programs, and the continuous expansion of the Honor Society.

Through his pioneering research, decades of active involvement, and extraordinary generosity, Dr. Anthony W. Kotula remains a true beacon of excellence—ensuring that future generations of food scientists are equipped to lead, innovate, and serve.
