Phi Tau Sigma Chapter of the Year Award
2026 Honoree
Since its inception in 1981, the University of Minnesota Chapter of Phi Tau Sigma has maintained a legacy of scholarly excellence, leadership, and community engagement in Food Science and Technology. Renowned for its collaborative spirit, the chapter has forged impactful partnerships with academia, professionals in the food industry, and the Minnesota Section of the Institute of Food Technologists (MNIFT).
Among its notable initiatives, the chapter has spearheaded the "Building a Science Bridge to Africa and Beyond Program." This program is dedicated to providing essential peer-reviewed journal articles and textbooks in food science to higher education food science programs in developing countries, with a particular emphasis on African nations. To fulfill its purpose, the chapter has shipped books to the food science departments of various universities overseas. Over the past four years, the chapter has sent books to Ethiopia, Indonesia, Zambia, and Ghana. This year, it is organizing a shipment of food science books to one of the universities in Nigeria.
A recent addition to the chapter's collaborative efforts is the growth of the "Speedy Science" research competition. Originally focused on UMN, the competition has now gone global. This year, students from countries such as India and Malaysia have submitted their abstracts. As the event grows, a committee is being formed to give it a more organized structure. Speedy Science offers students a dynamic platform to showcase their dedication and contributions to advancing food science and technology research, fostering innovation and collaboration. Another important part of this chapter is the board of directors’ active participation in volunteering activities at MNIFT events, such as the MNIFT suppliers’ expo and MNIFT industry meetings.
The chapter also organizes fundraising events with Little Caesars each year to strengthen the organization’s financial stability.
Looking ahead to 2026, the chapter remains dedicated to its mission of recognizing student achievement. Through scholarships, leadership development programs, networking opportunities, and the esteemed Phi Tau Sigma induction ceremonies, the chapter aims to honor students' dedication and hard work in Food Science and Technology. The induction ceremonies, where new members receive the Phi Tau Sigma pin, certificate, and Honor Cords from current Chapter officers, serve as a distinguished acknowledgment of students' accomplishments and contributions to the field. The chapter is committed to continuing these impactful events and initiatives, empowering students and professionals to succeed in the constantly changing landscape of Food Science and Technology.
